Russian forward of the Washington Capitals hockey club Alexander Ovechkin scored his 895th goal in the National Hockey League (NHL) regular season on April 6 against the New York Islanders, thereby breaking the record of four-time Stanley Cup winner Wayne Gretzky, who scored 894 goals.

He scored a goal against a compatriot playing for the opposing team, Ilya Sorokin. So, Ovechkin topped the ranking of the most accurate snipers in the league.

The day before, Ovechkin scored his 894th goal in the match against HC Chicago of the NHL regular season, repeating Gretzky's sniper record. The Canadian hockey player personally congratulated the Russian player on the event. After the match, the athletes also took a photo together in the locker room.

Olympic hockey champion Valery Kamensky, in an interview with Izvestia on April 5, called Ovechkin's success an achievement of world hockey. According to him, the Russian proves his superiority and the fact that he has no equal with his success.
