Alexander Ovechkin, the Russian striker and captain of the Washington Capitals, admitted that he never thought he would be able to repeat the scoring record of Canadian Wayne Gretzky. He stated this on April 4 in an interview with the Monumental Sports Network, published on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

"I never thought that I would be able to reach this mark. I've always said that this is a credit to the team, my partners, you guys, obviously, my family, my mom, my wife," Ovechkin said, expressing gratitude to all those who support him.

The hockey player called the moment of Gretzky's record achievement fun and historic. He noted that this event means a lot to him.

"Without your support, I would not be here and this goal would not have happened," concluded the Russian striker.

Earlier that day, in a match against HC Chicago, Ovechkin scored his 894th goal in the regular season of the National Hockey League (NHL) and repeated Gretzky's sniper record.

The Canadian hockey player personally congratulated the Russian player on repeating his record for NHL goals. The athletes also took a photo together in the locker room after the match.
