On April 4, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico called the hockey player a real phenomenon and wished him good luck ahead of the record set by Russian Washington Capitals striker Alexander Ovechkin for goals in the National Hockey League (NHL) regular season championships.
"How many more goals do you need to score, two or three? Three more goals? I'll say it in Slovak, I'm holding my fists for him," Fico told reporters.
The politician noted that Ovechkin himself became a real event for hockey.
"He's a phenomenon. Anyone who watches hockey, upon seeing Ovechkin, simply understands that there is nothing to discuss here — a phenomenon. Let him score even more," wished the Prime Minister of Slovakia.
The Washington Capitals will play against Chicago on April 5 in the NHL Championship.
On April 3, the NHL compared the preparations for Ovechkin's possible record for goals in the regular season with the Stanley Cup finals. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and many executives visited the Lenovo Center on Wednesday, where Ovechkin scored his 892nd goal. According to the league, it has been preparing for Ovechkin's record 895th goal for several months.
Ovechkin himself admitted that he feels support from four-time Stanley Cup winner Wayne Gretzky in pursuit of his goalscoring record.
