Almost half of the UN HRC countries did not support the commission's mandate on Ukraine

When voting in the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council, 22 out of 47 countries opposed the extension of the mandate of the "independent" commission to investigate Russia's actions in Ukraine, it was reported on April 4 following a meeting.

According to the table on the UN Council's page on the social network X (ex. Twitter), of the 47 member states, four voted against extending the mandate of the commission, established in 2022, the newspaper notes.Ru». The number of abstentions was 18 States, and 25 voted in support.

Thus, the draft resolution on the consequences of Russia's actions "for human rights in Ukraine" was adopted by an insignificant majority of votes.

On April 2, after a meeting between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin and his Chinese counterpart Liu Bin, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Russia was open to realistic peace initiatives to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, as well as mediation proposals. It was noted that in this context, the activities of the "Group of Friends of Peace in Ukraine", created at the UN site, were discussed.

Back in December 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out the degradation of the international human rights system due to the bias of its institutions by Western countries.
