Dry and dehydrated skin are often confused because of their external similarity, but they are completely different concepts. Natalia Tkachenko, a cosmetologist chemist and founder of the beauty brand Roz Mary, told Izvestia on April 6 what is the difference between caring for different types.

"If dry skin is a type of skin caused by genetics and the internal state of the body, which its owner inherited for life, then dehydration is a temporary condition caused by a number of external factors," she noted.

According to the expert, the condition of dry skin is caused by a lack of lipids (fats) due to the poor functioning of the sebaceous glands. The skin type cannot be changed, but you can choose the right care that will improve its aesthetic condition. To do this, it is necessary to maintain the level of hydration of the skin.

Tkachuk advised to monitor the content of hyaluronic acid, amino acids and chitosan in the cosmetics used.

She pointed out that a temporary state of dehydration of the skin can be caused by a general lack of moisture in the body, associated, for example, with a disease.

"This effect can also be caused by exposure to sunlight on unprotected skin...> hard water, regular too-hot showers and too much central heating," Tkachenko explained.

According to the cosmetologist, it is not difficult to deal with dehydration of the skin — you just need to eliminate its root causes. So, she advised to start drinking a glass of warm water in the morning and several times during the day, adjust the heating in the apartment, use an air humidifier, choose sunscreens and limit exposure to the open sun.

In addition, the use of cosmetics with a high pH level, peels and scrubs with a high concentration of acids, lotions containing alcohol should be excluded. Tkachenko recommended replacing these products with mild cleansing foams, enzyme gels, special cosmetic mistes and tonics.

Alexandra Pashkova, a dermatologist at the Semeynaya clinic network, noted in a conversation with Izvestia on March 20 that with the onset of spring, the skin is facing new challenges: temperature fluctuations, increased solar activity, and vitamin deficiency. The specialist reported on the importance of hydration this season, as after winter, the skin is often dehydrated due to prolonged exposure to low temperatures and dry indoor air. To maintain the water balance, Pashkova advised using products with hyaluronic acid.
