Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturian has signed a law passed earlier by parliament on the beginning of the republic's accession process to the European Union (EU). This was announced on April 4 by the presidential press service.

Sputnik Armenia clarified that the law implies the beginning of the process of preparation for Armenia's accession to the EU. The publication emphasizes that this step does not automatically mean the republic's accession to the European Union, as such a decision must be put to a referendum.

On March 26, the Armenian parliament adopted in the second and final reading a draft law on the beginning of the country's accession process to the European Union. 64 deputies voted for the adoption of the document, seven opposed it.

In response, on April 3, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Armenia would not be able to join the Eurasian Economic Union and the EU at the same time.

Earlier, on February 12, the Armenian parliament adopted the relevant draft in the first reading. The European Commission (EC) told Izvestia that the process of Yerevan's rapprochement with the EU is gaining momentum, but it has not yet submitted an official application for joining the union.
