Within five years, Russia will have the most advanced research infrastructure. This was announced on April 4 by Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center.

"By decision of the President [of Russia Vladimir Putin], a large-scale program has been launched to create a research infrastructure. And in fact, everything is moving at full speed. This means that over the next five years we will have the most advanced research infrastructure based on mega—installations in the world," he said at an event dedicated to the re-election of the head of the Association for the Advancement of Science.

This infrastructure will also include two key installations: the PIK reactor in Gatchina and the synchrotron with free electron lasers in Protvino, Kovalchuk added.

"A new synchrotron is being created at the Kurchatsky Institute, where we are located. A new lithography machine for technology is being launched. A synchrotron is being built at the university on Russian Island. And this year we have to launch the Skif synchrotron near Koltsovo," he said.

In addition, the President of the National Research Center noted that eight nuclear medicine facilities are planned to be commissioned this year.

In November last year, Putin said that the people of Russia had created a great power, opened the way for humanity to explore the stars, and also ensured the country's leadership in the use of peaceful atom. He also stressed that fellow citizens should determine their own future on the basis of a sovereign worldview, national culture and a firm commitment to moral values.
