Squalane is a stabilized form of squalene obtained during hydration. Its extraction is made from wheat germ and rice bran, as well as various types of oils: linseed, cottonseed and olive. This substance has an oily texture and is widely used in the cosmetics industry. Natalia Tkachenko, a cosmetologist chemist and founder of the beauty brand Roz Mary, told Izvestia about this on April 3.
Squalene was discovered back in 1906 by the Japanese chemist Mitsumaru Tsujimoto. And for 119 years now, research has been conducted on its use in cosmetics and skin care. Squalane was first produced from squalene in 1916. It is more resistant to both oxidation processes and high temperatures in comparison with squalene. It has a longer shelf life, is practically odorless, almost colorless, and is perfectly compatible with human skin. It is the set of these properties that has made it a great ingredient for cosmetic formulas.
Natalia Tkachenko, a cosmetology chemist and founder of the beauty brand Roz Mary, explains that squalane has pronounced moisturizing and softening properties. It helps to retain moisture in the skin, strengthens its protective barrier, makes it more elastic and smoothes fine wrinkles.
"Protection from external factors and free radicals will also be an advantage of this substance. Squalane, due to its properties, does not clog pores and does not contribute to the formation of nasty black dots," the expert notes.
Squalane is also quickly absorbed into the skin, without leaving a feeling of greasiness and stickiness. That is why it is chosen by those who prefer light textures instead of heavy oils.
"Cosmetics containing squalane will be useful for those who struggle with the first signs of skin aging, as well as for owners of dry and dehydrated skin. In general, this product is suitable for all skin types," Tkachenko said.
The increased demand for scavalan can be explained by the fact that the popularity of herbal ingredients is currently growing. The cosmetologist said that for some time it was extracted only from shark liver, so for a while it was forgotten about. And even with the transition to plant-based sources of squalane production, the situation has not changed much. But today the situation is completely different, and he has become very popular. In combination with Centella Asiatica, squalane perfectly restores the protective barrier of the skin.
In addition to skin care, squalane is also used in other beauty treatments. Some hairdressers like to apply squalane in its pure form to the ends of their clients' hair, as this substance gives them a healthy shine. According to the expert, if you take squalane in its pure form and apply it to the skin before using powder or foundation, you can get an excellent base for makeup, as this product is perfectly absorbed. Squalane can also be used as a therapeutic ointment. Apply it to various dry areas of the body.
"Cosmetics containing squalane can be applied daily to the skin or used as another moisturizer when your skin is losing moisture," concluded the cosmetologist.
On March 20, Alexandra Pashkova, a dermatologist at the Semeynaya clinic network, noted in a conversation with Izvestia that the skin is facing new challenges with the onset of spring: temperature fluctuations, increased solar activity, and vitamin deficiency. The specialist reported on the importance of hydration this season, as after winter, the skin is often dehydrated due to prolonged exposure to low temperatures and dry indoor air. To maintain the water balance, Pashkova advised using products with hyaluronic acid.
