- The UN stated the importance of observing the law in the case of the head of Gagauzia Hutsul

The United Nations (UN) is monitoring the situation with the arrest of the head of the Gagauz Autonomous Region, Yevgenia Hutsul, and stresses the need to respect legal procedure and the rule of law. This was announced on April 3 by the official representative of the UN Secretary General Stephane Dujarric.
"We are aware of reports of Hutsul detention. We are not in a position to comment on the ongoing internal paperwork, but we note the importance of observing due process and the rule of law," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.
Dujarric added that the UN continues to closely monitor the events in Moldova and calls on all parties to avoid actions that could lead to increased tension.
On April 2, the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, after her arrest, called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to pay attention to the situation around the region. Gutsul stressed that the Moldovan judicial system is being used by the authorities as a tool to "dismantle the autonomy" of Gagauzia.
Hutsul was detained at the Chisinau airport on March 25. According to the Moldovan Prosecutor General's Office, this happened after her name was found on the list of persons prohibited from leaving the country. On March 28, the head of Gagauzia was arrested for 20 days.
