The Russian Embassy in Niger will "definitely" open this year. This was announced on April 3 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a meeting with his counterpart from the African country Bakari Yau Sangare.

"In the very near future, with your help, we will complete all the organizational work for the return of our embassy. We will definitely do this in 2025," the Russian Foreign Minister said.

He noted that he was very pleased to have the opportunity to hold bilateral talks on the sidelines of the first-ever meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Russian Federation and the Alliance of Sahel States (AHS). According to Lavrov, Moscow is satisfied with the development of its bilateral relations with Niamey.

"You have resumed the activities of your embassy in Moscow. Your ambassador has already presented his credentials to President Vladimir Putin," the Russian Foreign Minister said on the agency's website.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova noted on January 23 that Russia plans to open its diplomatic missions in Niger, Sierra Leone and South Sudan in the near future. The diplomat clarified that in 2023, the Russian embassies in Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea began their work. The embassies in Niger and Sierra Leone should be the next to open, where diplomatic work will resume after it was discontinued in 1992 for financial reasons.
