Macron announces response to US duties

Europe will take measures in response to the US imposition of trade duties on the European Union (EU) countries. This was announced on April 3 by French President Emmanuel Macron.
"The response from Europe will consist of two stages <..> The first response will be given in mid-April. A second, larger—scale response to the duties announced yesterday will be given at the end of the month, after a detailed study," Macron said at a meeting with representatives of economic sectors.
He added that EU countries are considering all tools to influence the United States, including retaliatory measures in the field of digital services and financing mechanisms for the American economy. Macron stressed that Europe must protect itself and take effective and proportionate measures.
Earlier in the day, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the introduction of import duties by US President Donald Trump was a mistake. Scholz added that Germany will defend its interests.
On April 2, Trump announced large-scale measures: base tariffs of 10% are being introduced for all products supplied to the United States. For the EU, this figure has been raised to 20%, and for China — to 34%. In his speech, the president called April 2 the day when Americans will become rich again.
