Zakharova expressed surprise at Vucic's words about the liberation of Yugoslavia

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said she was surprised by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic's words that his country was liberated in World War II mainly on its own. The diplomat announced this on April 3 during a briefing.
"When you quote him [Vucic], you have to take it in a complicated way, because the topic is very complicated. Of course, it is surprising that the Serbian president did not find the right words, especially in the year of the 80th anniversary of the Victory, to honor the memory of those who liberated Europe and, in particular, Yugoslavia in the ranks of the Red Army," Zakharova stressed.
The diplomat recalled that about 10,000 soldiers and officers of the Red Army died during the liberation of Yugoslavia, 4.3 thousand of them during the liberation of Belgrade. In addition, about 21,000 Red Army soldiers were injured or missing.
Zakharova expressed the hope that Vucic's words were an incorrectly constructed phrase. She also stressed that she would like her "Serbian colleagues" to find the right words in order not to forget about the role of the Red Army in the liberation of their country.
On March 30, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he was concerned about the behavior of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. During his speech at the ceremony dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, he did not mention the exploits of the Red Army.
