Frequent nocturnal seizures can be an early symptom of peripheral nerve, spinal cord, and brain damage. In addition, they can occur in diseases of the thyroid and parathyroid glands, liver and kidney disorders, atherosclerosis of the heart vessels and arteries of the lower extremities. On April 4, Naira Kurbanova, a neurologist at the SM Clinic, told Izvestia about this.

She explained that cramps are unpleasant, often painful muscle contractions that most often occur in the calf muscles, less often in the thigh and foot areas. Their appearance can be caused by various factors: dehydration, intense physical exertion, hypothermia, overheating, excessive salt intake and electrolyte imbalance in the body.

"If we talk about recurring nocturnal seizures, they can be an early symptom of damage to peripheral nerves, spinal cord and brain. They can also occur in diseases of the thyroid and parathyroid glands, liver and kidney disorders, atherosclerosis of the heart vessels and arteries of the lower extremities," the doctor warned.

The neurologist clarified that in some cases seizures can develop while taking certain medications.

"A possible cause may be a hereditary predisposition, but this is extremely rare," Kurbanova added.

She warned: you should not ignore such a symptom. It is important to consult a doctor and determine the exact cause, because seizures are often symptoms of quite dangerous diseases.

Earlier, on April 1, Ekaterina Demyanovskaya, a neurologist and expert at the Hemotest laboratory, named the most common brain diseases to Izvestia. According to her, in neurodegenerative diseases, brain cells are gradually lost, and with them, the functions they performed. Such conditions may be hereditary or develop sporadically. And one of the most common degenerative diseases of the brain is Alzheimer's disease.
