The Novgorod Regional Court recognized the crimes of the Nazis and their accomplices in the Novgorod region during the Great Patriotic War (WWII) as genocide. This was announced on April 3 by the press service of the National Center for Historical Memory under the President of the Russian Federation.

It is clarified that the lawsuit considered by the court is the result of the joint work of the Investigative Committee, the Prosecutor General's Office, the Prosecutor's Office of the region, the National Center for Historical Memory, as well as search engines, historians, archivists and local historians.

At the previous meeting, Elena Malysheva, head of the National Center for Historical Memory, member of the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation, presented an expert opinion on the losses among the population of the region during the Nazi occupation.

As Alexander Dronov, Acting Governor of the Novgorod Region, noted, the decision was the final one in a number of trials for recognition of the Nazi genocide that took place in the regions of Russia occupied during the Second World War.

"All this is very important for the restoration of historical justice, so that every punisher and war criminal receives the punishment they deserve. The memory of the people tortured by the Nazis, of the countless victims of the war, is our conscience," he said.

On March 28, the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia announced that the court recognized as genocide of the Soviet people the crimes of the German invaders against the civilian population of the Zaporizhia region during the occupation of the region during the Second World War.

According to the official representative of the department, Svetlana Petrenko, during the study of archival materials, the analysis of witness testimony, and the excavation, the investigators collected a set of evidence confirming the inhuman cruelty of the Germans to civilians.
