- The Interior Ministry warned about the terms of up to 10 years for renting accounts in WhatsApp

For renting accounts in the WhatsApp messenger (owned by Meta Corporation, recognized as an extremist organization and banned in the Russian Federation), criminal liability in the form of imprisonment for up to 10 years is threatened. On April 3, the Department for the Organization of the fight against the illegal use of information and communication technologies (UBK) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia warned about this.
"By submitting your account (in WhatsApp. — Ed.) as a result, you become an accomplice in a crime, the responsibility for which is provided for in art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation "Fraud", — stated in the Telegram channel of the department.
The UBK of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia also stressed that the transfer of accounts to third parties may lead to their owners becoming accomplices in a crime, since other people's profiles can be used by fraudulent call centers.
Andrey Biychuk, director of the MTS Defender product, announced on March 6 a new fraudulent scheme in which it is proposed to rent a WhatsApp account for 200 rubles a day. According to him, the attackers place ads about the possibility of renting a room in Telegram channels, forums and job sites. After confirming the lease from the owner's number, they begin to write messages to his friends asking them to lend or transfer money.
