In the Zaporizhia region, a former employee of the Higher School of Economics was sentenced to six years in a penal colony.

Former Director of the State Institution Directorate of Property of the Ministry of Property and Land Relations (MIZO) Andrey Petrov was sentenced to six years in a penal colony by the Military-Civil Administration (CAA) of the Zaporizhia region. This was announced on April 3 by the press service of the Federal Security Service of Russia for the region.

It is specified that the man is accused of abuse of office, embezzlement of significant funds using his official position, as well as illegal acquisition and possession of firearms and ammunition.

According to the agency, in 2022, he illegally transferred the facility, which is under the operational management of the MIZO of the Zaporozhye region, to third parties for conducting business. In addition, the man organized fictitious employment of employees in the State Institution "Directorate of Property", forging signatures in payroll statements and appropriating stolen funds.

Criminal cases were initiated on this fact.

"The Melitopol interdistrict court of the Zaporozhye region sentenced Petrov V.A. to imprisonment for a period of six years to be served in a correctional colony of general regime, with a fine of 250 thousand rubles," the agency said in a statement.

The court also ordered the defendant to compensate for the damage caused by the crimes in the amount of over 3.2 million rubles.

Illegal payments amounted to 4.2 million, the investigation believes, and almost left employees of the State Research Institute of Civil Aviation without salaries.

On April 1, in the Smolensk region, a businessman who was involved in the embezzlement of budget funds from the Territorial Compulsory Medical Insurance Fund was sentenced to three years and two months in prison in a general regime colony with a fine of 500 thousand rubles. The attacker developed a plan to steal budget funds by forming auction documentation for the supply of medical products based on commercial offers from structures under his control with inflated prices.
