The European Union (EU) is exploring the possibility of using NATO command structures when deploying a peacekeeping contingent in Ukraine. This was reported on April 3 by the Financial Times newspaper, citing sources.
According to the newspaper, the "coalition of the willing" discussed an initiative according to which the alliance's command and control structures should be used when deploying "security forces in Ukraine." As follows from the proposal, the peacekeepers will be able to use the common intelligence and surveillance capabilities of NATO.
This measure was proposed to be implemented with the aim of "indirect participation" of the United States in the operation or tacit support from Washington, the authors said. A day earlier, Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth said he would not attend a meeting of 50 countries to coordinate military support for Ukraine. On the same day, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that in the first quarter of 2025, the bloc countries allocated about €20 billion for military assistance to Ukraine. He added that NATO will continue to support Kiev and welcomes US efforts to resolve the conflict.
