The introduction by US President Donald Trump of new duties on imports of foreign goods will allow him to achieve two goals. This was stated on March 3 by Andrew Lipow, an American economist, analyst, and head of the Lipow Oil Associates oil trader, in an interview with Izvestia.

"The first goal is to bring industrial jobs back to the United States, such as steel, aluminum, and other heavy industries, such as shipbuilding, because he believes that other countries are infringing on the United States by subsidizing their own industry or manipulating the currency," the expert said.

The second goal, in his opinion, is to create equal conditions in international trade, when the duties of different countries would become approximately the same.

"While the United States has very low tariffs on, say, car imports from Europe, and the European Union has very high tariffs on American-made cars that are imported in the opposite direction," Lipow said.

According to him, it is too early to draw conclusions about how successful such duties will be. The introduction of new tariffs may also lead to retaliatory measures from the countries they affect. The analyst cited Vietnam, Cambodia or China as an example of such states.

"I don't want to call it a trade war right now, but we can see that trade between these countries, especially with higher tariffs, may decrease over the next few months," the economist said.

He also urged not to attach importance to the absence of Russia in the list of countries against which it was decided to impose tariffs. According to him, the American leader "still wants to achieve a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine."

The analyst stressed that the increase in duties in a couple of weeks will affect the prices of vegetables and fruits that are supplied to the United States from other countries. At the same time, it is too early to draw any conclusions about the impact of tariffs on global trade.

"Supply chains are very short, and therefore the consumer can quickly notice the effects in the supermarket. It may take several weeks or months to see the impact on, say, imports of household goods from China," the economist concluded.

On March 2, Trump announced the introduction of mutual trade duties for all countries of the world. He noted that the profits earned will be used to pay off the national debt and reduce taxes for American citizens. Trump also announced that duties of 25% on all foreign-made cars will be imposed in the United States from midnight.

On March 26, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of 25% duties in the United States on all cars and trucks manufactured outside the country. He clarified that these measures will come into force on April 2 and will be added to the existing ones. The White House estimates that approximately $100 billion in annual duties will be collected.
