Producers expect lower sales of French alcohol in the United States amid tariffs

Sales of French wines and spirits in the United States may fall by at least 20% due to import duties. This was reported on April 3 by the Reuters news agency with reference to the French wine and spirits exporters group FEVS.
"This will have a very significant impact on business in the United States... a very significant impact on the American consumer," warned Gabriel Picard, chairman of FEVS.
The United States is the largest market for French wines and spirits, the agency notes. In 2024 alone, the volume of exports of these products to the country increased by 5% and amounted to $4.12 billion. At the same time, global alcohol exports to France have been declining for the second year in a row.
"The French wine and spirits industry has already come under pressure: in 2024, global exports declined for the second year in a row due to threats of tariffs in the United States, a weakening Chinese market and lower prices," the agency reports.
On March 26, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of 25% duties on all cars and trucks manufactured outside the country. He clarified that these measures will come into force on April 2 and will be added to the existing ones. The White House estimates that approximately $100 billion in annual duties will be collected.
