Experts have warned about cheating schemes when buying gardening tools

Before the imminent start of the holiday season, when Russians order large volumes of various goods on marketplaces or online stores, fraudsters use two schemes to steal their data, an expert on cybersecurity told Izvestia.
In March, sales of household and garden goods increased one and a half to two times year-on-year, marketplaces and trading platforms told Izvestia. Demand for pruning shears, rakes, buckets, scythes, carts and wheelbarrows, sprayers has increased, Avito estimates. Sales of barbecue products are also growing: barbecues, skewers, tandoori.
During the period when Russians order a large number of goods before the start of the holiday season and the barbecue season, fraudsters have developed new deception schemes, said Timofey Voronin, Deputy director for Technology Transfer at the NTI Competence Center for Big Data Storage and Analysis Technologies at Lomonosov Moscow State University.
"The delivery service allegedly calls the person and says that the parcel has arrived, but the invoice or packaging is damaged, therefore it is necessary to confirm the recipient's identity. To do this, they use a link that leads to a website similar to Public Services," he explained.
Logging in to such a site will lead to account hacking. In another case, according to the expert, a person receives a call allegedly from a delivery service or marketplace. The fraudster reports that the victim has been sent a gift or parcel, which must be received and a pick-up point selected.
"The pick—up point is selected by sending the code to the "operator" to log in to the Public Services account," the expert warned.
In both cases, according to Timofey Voronin, fraudsters rely on the curiosity and inattention of the potential victim of deception.
