The political scientist pointed to another escalation spurt in the Middle East

The expansion of Israel's operations in the Gaza Strip is another escalation spurt, said Stanislav Tarasov, an expert on the problems of the Middle East and the Caucasus. He told Izvestia on April 2 about the reasons for the growing tension in the region and its consequences.
"All the events and prerequisites that Israel, by refusing to fulfill the second stage of the agreement with Gaza, actually disrupted the entire peace process that [US President Donald] was preparing. Trump is launching a new military operation — this is all an escalation in Gaza and Lebanon. There is an increase in tension around Iran. Plus, the Houthi theme has also been added, around which many events revolve. In general, we started from scratch. In this case, we see another escalation spurt," the political scientist said.
According to him, there are several reasons for this. Firstly, the American side, contrary to forecasts, as it turned out, does not have a strictly developed strategic plan for the settlement, although there are emotional breakthroughs, proposals for projects such as the resettlement of Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt and Jordan.
"The second point is related to the situation in Israel itself around [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu is facing commercial scandals one after another, including the so-called "Qatar Gate": his assistants were arrested because they seemed to take money to promote Qatar's interests or for their own electoral purposes. The crisis is brewing in such a way that some experts do not rule out a recurrence of civilian violence in Israel," Tarasov added.
In his opinion, an external confrontation could be a way out of this situation, which could unite society or delay or postpone internal political clashes.
"The combination of objective and subjective factors in the region creates an explosive mixture that can, under certain conditions, explode very seriously," the expert emphasized.
On March 18, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) resumed military operations against the Palestinian radical movement Hamas in Gaza. On March 28, the press service of the Gaza Ministry of Health reported that since March 18, more than 890 people have been killed and more than 1980 injured as a result of renewed Israeli attacks on the Palestinian enclave.
