The expert named common mistakes in seasonal tire storage

Improper storage of tires can significantly shorten their service life. One of the most common mistakes is storing rubber in a bag. In addition, many drivers use their tires incorrectly, which also shortens their "life". Nikolay Pogulyaev, head of the FIT SERVICE car service, told Izvestia on April 3 how to ride new tires properly so that they last longer.
According to the expert, maintaining the correct tire pressure is a key factor in the durability of rubber. He stressed that even a slight deviation from the norm (by only 20%) accelerates tread wear by 30%.
"Pressure control: on average, tire pressure decreases by 0.2–0.3 atmospheres every 10,000 kilometers. Even a small deviation from the norm can affect the resource of rubber," the specialist said.
He also warned drivers against aggressive driving style. Sudden starts and braking can reduce the service life of rubber by half — from the prescribed 40-50 thousand km to only 20 thousand. This is especially true for budget models that are less resistant to overheating and mechanical damage.
The expert paid special attention to the importance of regularly checking the collapse-convergence.
"Even if the car was operated carefully, the angles of the wheels can change in six months. For example, falling into a pit or hitting a curb can knock down angles within 0.5–1 degrees, which will increase rubber wear by up to 20%," he explained.
Pogulyaev also gave recommendations on seasonal tire storage. He called the main mistakes storage in plastic bags, under direct sunlight and in places where there may be sudden temperature changes. The expert considers the optimal conditions to be temperatures from +5 to +25 degrees with a humidity of 50-60% and UV protection.
"If it is not possible to properly store tires at home, it is worth using the seasonal storage service. This is inexpensive, but it significantly extends their service life," the expert concluded.
Earlier, on April 2, Alexander Kornev, head of the department for work with importers at Gazprombank Autoleasing, told Izvestia that mandatory procedures would help avoid breakdowns and extend the life of the car. According to him, the first step is to thoroughly wash the body, paying special attention to the bottom, thresholds, doors and wheel arches, where the remnants of road reagents accumulate. You should also check the condition of the wiper blades, as the rubber wears out faster in winter.
