Washington's position on NATO is detrimental to the alliance, and strengthening ties with Russia can be a big problem for the countries of the association. This was reported on April 2 by the AFP news agency, citing sources.

"The level of optimism is definitely decreasing. The United States has not yet made any concrete decisions, but every day seems to bring another blow to the foundations of the alliance," the source told AFP.

It is clarified that until now, US officials have emphasized Washington's commitment to the alliance, within which American military power has ensured the security of the West for more than seven decades.

As the agency pointed out, the negotiations between Russia and the United States are causing concern in NATO due to the possible rapprochement between the two countries. However, according to an unnamed diplomat, improving the relationship between the parties can be beneficial.

"This may be a bitter pill, but if it's just a tactical step, then of course it's acceptable," the diplomat said.

On the same day, Euractiv reported that discussions on a review of relations with Russia had been frozen in NATO amid Washington's negotiations with Moscow and Kiev. It is noted that the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague (Netherlands) will be a turning point in the alliance's relations with the Russian Federation. Now, when the United States is holding peace talks with Russia and Ukraine, all discussions on this topic have been "suspended", they have not been conducted for several months.

At the same time, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that the Trump administration's rhetoric about the country's possible withdrawal from NATO is designed only to "spur" the bloc's members and is unlikely to become reality.
