A criminal case on extortion was opened against the head of the colony in Transbaikalia.

According to the materials of the FSB, a criminal case was opened in Transbaikalia against the head of the colony of the regional UFSIN. This was announced on Wednesday, April 2, by the press service of the regional directorate of the FSB of Russia.

"During the operational search activities, it was established that the person involved in the period from 2022 to 2024 organized a scheme to extort money from convicts for the subsequent mitigation of the regime of serving a sentence or parole," the agency said in a statement.

If the convicts refused to participate in the scheme, they were subjected to psychological pressure and threatened with disciplinary action.

The criminal case was initiated upon the commission by an official of actions that clearly go beyond his authority out of self-interest or other personal interest (paragraph "e" of Part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).

The article provides for a penalty of imprisonment for a term of three to ten years with the deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years.

Earlier, on March 21, the Desnogorsk City Court in the Smolensk region convicted two defendants in the case of embezzlement of funds intended for the modernization of the Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant (SAES). In total, four heads of structural divisions of Atomenergoproekt JSC (AEP), as well as the director of Atomenergostroyproekt LLC (AESP) participated in the implementation of criminal activities. All of them are charged under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
