The U.S. Attorney's office intends to seek the death penalty for 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, accused of murdering the chief executive officer of the largest United States insurance company UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson. This is stated in a statement by the head of the Ministry of Justice of the country, Pam Bondi, published on the agency's website on April 1.

"After careful consideration, I have instructed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case," Bondi said.

It is clarified that this decision was made as part of the implementation of the program of US President Donald Trump to end violent crimes and return the country to security.

The justice minister added that Thompson was not only an innocent man, but also the father of two children.

On December 4, 2024, Thompson's murder was reported. The man was standing outside the hotel where an investor conference was to be held when Mangione allegedly fired several shots at him.

After that, on December 10, the Manhattan prosecutor's office filed charges against the previously detained Mangione.

On December 24, Arkady Bukh, an American lawyer, said that the phenomenon of mass public support for the suspect in Thompson's murder lies in the growing dissatisfaction with the medical system of public or private insurance in the United States.
