The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has demanded that Finland explain the reasons for closing its borders with Russia. This was reported on Monday, April 1, by the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat (HS).

"Nine people of Russian origin living in Finland have filed a complaint with the ECHR. The applicants believe that the closure of the eastern border violates their human rights for a variety of reasons, as travel between Finland and Russia has been an important part of their lives," the publication says.

They also listed the reasons why the plaintiffs filed a complaint. In particular, they are now unable to see their families from the Russian Federation and visit cemeteries six times a year, as required by Orthodoxy, which violates their freedom of religion. In addition, there were complaints about the inability to receive Russian pensions.

On the same day, it was reported that Finland may start considering the partial opening of the border with Russia no earlier than the end of 2025. It is assumed that the opening of the border can take place in several stages, starting with cargo transportation.

In November 2023, Finland closed all checkpoints on the border with Russia under the pretext of an influx of migrants from third countries.
