On April 1, the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, addressed US Vice President Jay Dee Vance, saying that her illegal detention by the Moldovan authorities was part of a campaign to eliminate autonomy.

"My illegal detention is only part of a campaign to eliminate our autonomy," reads the message posted on her Telegram channel.

According to her, the law in Moldova has become a "weapon in the hands of the authorities," which is "the beginning of the end of justice."

Hutsul stressed that the Gagauz Autonomy does not seek confrontation. According to her, the region wants to "preserve the legitimate right to a special legal status" in Moldova.

The head of Gagauzia noted that Vance's attention to the situation could prevent an escalation of tension in the region. Bashkan expressed hope for the assistance of the American side, calling the political assessment of what is happening by Washington institutions extremely important.

Hutsul was detained at the Chisinau airport on March 25. According to the Moldovan Prosecutor General's Office, this happened after her name was found on the list of persons prohibited from leaving the country. On March 28, the head of Gagauzia was arrested for 20 days. This period turned out to be 10 days less than the prosecutors had requested.

The Pobeda bloc, in turn, expressed categorical protest against the court's decision to keep the head of the Gagauz Autonomy in custody for 20 days and called it a planned step to increase pressure on the dissenters.
