Europe needs to reduce its dependence on the United States in the areas of healthcare and defense. This was announced on April 1 by French President Emmanuel Macron during a speech at the Franco-Danish Economic Forum, which was broadcast on the YouTube channel of the Reuters news agency.

The French leader drew attention to the fact that European countries have already experienced the consequences of excessive dependence on other countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Perhaps we didn't heed the warnings of that time enough. At that moment, we put their interests above our own," Macron said.

Macron recalled that when it came to the production of vaccines, Washington preferred to reserve ingredients to create a panacea for the United States before supplying them to the European market. Europe received the same refusal from India, the president claims.

In addition, the French leader also touched upon the issue of defense. He noted that recent weeks have shown Europe "the cost of defense dependence on the United States." At the same time, Macron stressed that European countries have the opportunity to independently provide themselves with defense capabilities.

Earlier, on March 30, Bloomberg reported an increase in anti-American sentiment in Europe due to the policies of US President Donald Trump. Noted. that Washington's threat of tariffs on European goods has led to campaigns to boycott American products in European countries.
