- Artemon — deri poloz: what kind of holiday is this, what can and cannot be done on April 6?

According to the national calendar, Artemon — deri poloz is celebrated on April 6. The holiday got its name because of the weather conditions, which often led to damage to the runners of the sleigh. In 2025, the celebration falls on a Sunday. Izvestia tells us about the beliefs and omens that exist on this day.
The history of the national holiday celebrated on April 6
The history of the celebration is inextricably linked with the name of St. Artemy (Artemon) of Thessalonica, who lived at the turn of the first and second centuries in the ancient city of Seleucia in modern Turkey. He was famous for his piety, so that the Apostle Paul himself appointed him the first bishop of the city as the most worthy.
The saint wisely led his flock and died at a very old age, having gained a reputation for many good deeds. And, although not much is known about the saint's life, his memory has been preserved for many centuries. The church annually honors the saint in early April.
This day is popularly known as Artemon — deri poloz. There was also often snow in the yard, which, under the influence of the sun, turned into an ice floor, which could severely damage or strip the runners of the sleigh. Meanwhile, the peasants were in no hurry to replace the sledges with carts, waiting for the warm weather to fully set in.
On a holiday, they often cleaned up the courtyards and lit bonfires. Everything unnecessary was thrown into the fire: broken benches, leaky mattresses and other out-of-use items. Huts were also bypassed with fire to drive away evil spirits. The flame often illuminated the road to the church so that travelers could attend the evening service before the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which is celebrated the next day.
What can and cannot be done on a holiday
Since any work is considered a sin at the Annunciation, all urgent matters must be completed in advance. This applies not only to physical labor, but also to needlework. On the eve of a big church holiday, one should not swear, swear, enter into conflicts with loved ones, or refuse help.
According to popular beliefs, it is also not recommended to visit or host someone, so as not to discourage luck. You should not make large purchases and lend money, otherwise the money will flow through your fingers.
Since the celebration falls on Lent, it is forbidden to arrange noisy festivities. The consumption of food of animal origin and alcohol is prohibited. On the feast of the Annunciation itself, small allowances are made for believers.
