Ukraine was the first to violate agreements with Russia, this concerns the main provision of the Treaty on Russian-Ukrainian Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership, which was signed on May 31, 1997. This was reported on March 29 by the Italian newspaper Fatto Quotidiano (FQ).

The publication recalls that the signatures to this document were put in Kiev at that time by the leaders of the two countries, Boris Yeltsin and Leonid Kuchma.

"Ukraine has violated the Treaty on Russian-Ukrainian Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership, <...> starting its movement towards the abyss. This treaty, also known as the Great Treaty, obligated Ukraine not to use its territory to pose a threat to Russia's security and vice versa," the author clarifies.

The terms of the document were violated on April 4, 2008, when the NATO countries at the Bucharest summit announced the possibility of Ukraine's inclusion in the alliance. The publication recalled that in the 1990s, the military bloc pursued an aggressive policy of including Poland in the alliance, which is why Yeltsin, guessing about such actions, "hurried to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO" by signing the said treaty.

The ongoing NATO military exercises in Ukraine are also an unfriendly step that violates the country's agreements with Russia, the Italian media adds.

On March 31, Alexei Zudin, a political scientist and senior lecturer at MGIMO University of the Russian Foreign Ministry, told Izvestia that Ukraine would not join NATO, since if the country became a member of the alliance in its current form, it would mean that the alliance would be involved in a direct confrontation with Russia.

Earlier, on March 30, US President Donald Trump told reporters that despite Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky's desire for Ukraine to join NATO, this would never happen.
