The European Union (EU) is discussing the introduction of the 17th package of sanctions against Russia. This was announced on April 1 by the head of European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas.

She recalled that Europe had recently adopted the 16th package of anti-Russian restrictions.

"We are currently discussing the 17th package, and there is already a clear consensus that we need it," she said during a meeting of the European Parliament, which was broadcast on the European Commission's website.

Kallas added that Brussels should support the Kiev regime as actively as possible in order to ensure Ukraine's strong position in peace negotiations.

A day earlier, the Spanish Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that Britain, Germany, Spain, Italy, Poland and France had expressed their readiness to impose new sanctions against Russia over the conflict in Ukraine. The document notes that the Russian Federation must demonstrate a "serious commitment" to resolving the situation.
