Shortness of breath may be associated with a disease of the heart, lungs, or nervous system. At the same time, if a feeling of lack of air occurs suddenly and is accompanied by a high fever or chest pain, you should immediately contact an ambulance. Andrey Kostikov, a therapist at Dr. Alexandrovsky's Medical Center, told Izvestia about this on April 2.
The expert clarified that shortness of breath is a subjective feeling of lack of air, shortness of breath. In this case, an ambulance should be called immediately if dyspnoea occurs suddenly and abruptly, against a background of high fever, coughing with blood or foamy sputum.
"And also if the phenomenon is accompanied by chest pain, pressure, burning or heaviness, confusion, dizziness, loss of consciousness, swelling of the throat, tongue, difficulty swallowing. Or if your lips or fingertips turn blue against it, and if you experience shortness of breath after being bitten by an insect, taking medication, or coming into contact with an allergen," Kostikov added.
Shortness of breath, according to the doctor, may be associated with diseases of the heart, lungs, blood, nervous system or other organs.
The therapist explained that the most common causes of sudden lack of air are heart failure, coronary artery disease, heart attack, arrhythmias, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism and complications of diabetes mellitus.
"It can also be caused by panic attacks and stress, thyroid diseases and kidney failure," Kostikov added.
The expert recommends that you do not self-medicate and, with a gradual increase in shortness of breath, make an appointment with a therapist, while waiting for an examination to identify its cause.
Earlier, on March 30, Oksana Pivovarova, a professor at the Department of Therapy at the Medical Faculty of the State University of Enlightenment, a therapist, told Izvestia that a pulse of 100 beats per minute at rest is considered tachycardia. She clarified that this may be due to stress, anxiety, the use of caffeine, energy drinks, alcohol and nicotine. In addition, there are pathological causes of tachycardia, such as heart disease or infection.
