The European Union (EU) has all the necessary tools to protect against new US trade duties. This was announced on April 1 by the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen.

"The EU intends to negotiate tariffs with the United States from a position of strength, based on the size of its market and technological advances," she said during her speech at the European Parliament, which was broadcast on her Facebook page. Twitter).

Von der Leyen added that the EU expects that the next sectors of the economy to be subject to US duties will be semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and wood.

She also said that the imposition of trade duties would have negative consequences for American citizens. According to von der Leyen, in response to the new economic restrictions, the European Union will strengthen the unity of its internal market, which is regulated by the European Commission.

On March 27, US President Donald Trump announced that the US would impose even tougher duties on goods from the European Union and Canada in the event of anti-American cooperation between Ottawa and Brussels.

On the same day, Trump announced the introduction of 25 percent duties in the United States on all cars and trucks manufactured outside the country. He specified that these measures will come into force on April 2 and will be added to the existing ones.

In response, von der Leyen expressed regret over the new tariff on cars in the United States. She stressed that Trump's tariffs harm businesses and consumers.
