The new "Snow White" turned out to be one of Disney's most significant failures.
A remake of the classic Disney animation "Snow White" appeared on the screens of domestic cinemas a week after its worldwide release. However, the film has already been considered a failure: to date, its fees amount to less than $ 150 million with a budget of $ 250 million, which made the film one of the biggest failures of Disney film production in recent years.
The studio's first plans to make a game remake of its first full-length cartoon date back to 2012. They were thwarted because "Snow White: Revenge of the Dwarfs" and "Snow White and the Huntsman" were released almost simultaneously, and both films earned audience recognition. In 2016, "Snow White" was officially announced, and the script writing process began. The text did not suit the studio for a long time, all new stars were invited to work.
In 2021, Rachel Zegler was cast as Snow White. The choice of an actress of Polish-Colombian origin for the main role was not approved by the public. In addition, the star of the TV series "Game of Thrones" Peter Dinklage condemned the decision of Disney to invite dwarf artists to the roles of dwarfs. The studio said it would make these characters entirely computer-generated, but the public was also not satisfied with this option.
An additional problem was the political views of the actors. So, Zegler publicly supported the Palestinians, and Gal Gadot, who plays the role of Queen, supported Israel. Gadot began receiving threats, and Disney increased her security on the set. Then there was a strike by the actors' and producers' guilds, the film was not released in the spring of 2024 and was postponed to 2025. And in 2024, Zegler publicly expressed her negative attitude towards Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election.
