U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday, March 31, held a telephone conversation with Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente about measures to protect the U.S. automotive industry and strengthen coordination and cooperation in the field of security.

"Regarding border security, Secretary Rubio and Secretary of Foreign Affairs de la Fuente discussed actions to strengthen our borders, eliminate cartels, and stop the flow of illegal drugs, firearms, and illegal immigrants," spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said in a statement following the conversation.

Rubio welcomed Mexico's commitment to the results, including the deployment of 10,000 National Guard troops to the border.

Separately, the statement mentions the transfer to the jurisdiction of the United States of 29 particularly valuable targets, including major cartel figures, to bring them to justice.

The Secretary thanked Mexico for coordinating efforts to reduce illegal immigration, continuing to accept deportation flights and repatriating illegal immigrants to their home countries.

Earlier, on March 27, shares of General Motors, Ford and other automakers fell amid US President Donald Trump's decision to impose 25 percent duties on imports of cars manufactured outside the country.
