Nicaragua has refused to accept former Panamanian President Ricardo Mirtinelli and grant him asylum due to suspicion of a legal trap. This is stated in a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua, which was published by Canal 4 TV channel.

For example, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua reported that the Panamanian authorities had given Mirtinelli permission to leave, but then requested an Interpol red form regarding him. Such actions seemed contradictory to the host State, which is why it refused to accept the former Panamanian leader.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua called for a resolution of this controversial situation, after which they will be able to accept a political refugee.

"Such contradictory behavior might seem like a legal trap aimed at complicity and disloyalty. <...> We condemn the absurd positions and attitudes of the Panamanian authorities, positions that they must immediately change, adhering to the principles of political correctness and humanism," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country said in a statement.

Earlier, on February 7, 2024, it was reported that the Nicaraguan government had granted Martinelli asylum. The ex-president sought protection at the country's embassy after he began to face a long prison term after being sentenced to 11 years in prison last year. A criminal case was opened on the fact of money laundering fraud.
