The troops of the 2nd Ukrainian Front liberated Bratislava, not only the capital of Slovakia, but also a major communications hub and a powerful German defense stronghold on the Danube, the Izvestia newspaper reports.

"Today, on April 4, at 22 o'clock, the capital of our Motherland, Moscow, on behalf of the Motherland, salutes the valiant troops of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, who captured the city of Bratislava, with twenty artillery volleys from two hundred and twenty-four guns," the newspaper says.

There were exactly 35 days left until the Great Victory.

By order of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, the most distinguished formations and units were awarded the title of "Bratislava", they were also awarded orders.

The material was published as part of the Izvestia special project "80 days to Victory."
