Leshchenko pointed to Ovechkin's leadership position in the NHL over the years.

Alexander Ovechkin, a Russian hockey player for the Washington Capitals, has been reigning in the National Hockey League (NHL) for a long time. This opinion was shared with Izvestia on March 31 by Soviet and Russian pop singer, People's Artist of the RSFSR Lev Leshchenko.
"He took the lead. He was the leader of our hockey race, because at the age of 16 he had already received the first place in the draft. <...> For 24 years he has been a leader in hockey, North Atlantic hockey, where he rules and reigns," said Leshchenko.
According to the artist, Ovechkin linked his future life with Russia, because in 2026 he may move to Moscow and join the Dynamo Moscow club.
On March 30, Ovechkin scored his 890th goal in the NHL regular season. Wayne Gretzky currently holds the record with 894 goals. Ovechkin is expected to be able to beat the Canadian in the near future.
