Years of ignoring Russian President Vladimir Putin's warnings about the Ukrainian conflict have proved counterproductive. This follows from an article by Matt Whateley, a veteran of the British army and former head of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) mission in Donetsk, for The Spectator magazine on March 30.

"Decades of failure to take Vladimir Putin's warnings at face value have proved dangerously counterproductive. Putin has made it clear that NATO's eastward expansion is perceived as an existential threat to Russia," the publication says.

Whatley also added that the inability of the West to listen to the interests of the Russian Federation hinders the negotiation process.

"In order to effectively negotiate, it is necessary to listen, and not reflexively reject the fears of opponents," he wrote.

Retired Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Davis of the US Armed Forces earlier that day called on Western countries to take the words of the Russian president seriously. He stressed that Putin's words were much more thoughtful.
