- Facebook blocked the account of the former Romanian Foreign Minister for criticizing the cancellation of the elections

Facebook (the social network belongs to Meta, a company whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in Russia) has blocked the account of former Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Severin for criticizing the cancellation of the presidential elections in the country. This was announced on March 30 by the Solid News portal with reference to the politician's letter.
"On March 29, 2025, Facebook informed me that <...> a decision has been made to permanently block my account," the publication says.
According to Severin, an analysis of the texts on his Facebook page discussing the coup in Romania leads to the conclusion that the blocking is an effective policy tool of the Romanian authorities involved in the situation.
The former minister recalled that in the United States, the liquidation of accounts for dissent is prohibited. He stressed that Facebook's Romanian branch uses unacceptable methods to restrict citizens' access to alternative opinions.
Severin also protested against this decision and announced his intention to bring to justice its initiators when the political situation allows. He also plans to convey his point of view to the citizens.
The first round of the Romanian presidential election was held on November 24, 2024. According to official data, independent candidate Calin Georgescu was in the lead with 22.94% of the vote. The second round was scheduled to take place on December 8, as none of the candidates was able to gain more than 50%.
On November 28, the Constitutional Court of Romania demanded that the Central Election Commission of the Republic recount the results of the first round. In December, the Constitutional Court of the country annulled the results of the first round of the presidential election.
The repeated presidential elections will be held in the country in two rounds on May 4 and 18. Outgoing Romanian President Klaus Iohannis will remain in office until the May elections.
