The US military will begin to modernize its mission in Japan to the level of a "combat" command and strengthen military cooperation with Tokyo against the background of the fact that the administration of US President Donald Trump considers the containment of the People's Republic of China its top priority, Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth said.

"America and Japan stand firmly together in the face of the aggressive and violent actions of communist China," Bloomberg quoted him as saying on March 30.

The head of the US Department of Defense noted that the US Armed Forces in Japan will become a "combat headquarters," which "will increase readiness to respond to unforeseen circumstances or crises, support US operations and help Japan and American troops defend this territory."

As of March 2025, about 53,000 American troops are concentrated in Japan, which are dispersed across several American military bases.

Earlier, on February 8, Japan and the United States planned to work together on regional issues, including resolving the Taiwan issue.

On January 10, Florida Governor Ron Desantis declared that China is America's number one threat. He called for "an increase in naval power in the Indo-Pacific region in order to be able to contain China's ambitions."
