The trial of the arrested Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu is scheduled to take place live on TRT TV channel. This was announced on March 29 by the leader of the Turkish Republican People's Party (CHP) Ozgur Ozel.

"I convey a historic challenge to [Turkish President Tayyip] To Erdogan from Imamoglu. Mayor Ekrem [Imamoglu] says it's not his fault. If you trust yourself, I suggest holding the trial live on TRT TV channel," the politician conveyed Imamoglu's words.

On March 29, the opposition organized a large-scale rally in support of the arrested mayor in Istanbul. Imamoglu's wife, parents and children took part in the protest. Gazete Oksijen newspaper reports that the CHP has organized a collection of signatures for the release of the ex-mayor, whom the party itself had earlier nominated as a candidate for possible early presidential elections in Turkey in 2028.

Law enforcement agencies issued a warrant for Imamoglu's detention on March 19. An anti-corruption operation has been launched against the Istanbul administration. The mayor of the city was arrested on March 23. After that, the country's Interior Ministry reported that Imamoglu had been temporarily suspended from his duties.

Later, mass protests began in Turkey in connection with the detention of the mayor.
