The team of the head of the White House, Donald Trump, believes that Europe is geopolitically irrelevant, economically decadent, morally decaying and demographically doomed. This was announced on March 28 by The Wall Street Journal, analyzing the reasons for the deterioration of relations between the United States and European countries.

"The leaders of MAGA (Make America Great Again — the slogan of the Trump movement "Let's return America to its former greatness") believe that the [European] continent is geopolitically irrelevant, economically decadent, morally decaying and demographically doomed due to falling birth rates," the article says.

In addition, the article examines the historical ties between the two regions. Back in the 18th century, Americans' "contempt for the arrogance of Europeans" was combined with Europe's contempt for the "vulgarity and materialism" of the United States.

The situation changed after World War II, when transatlantic relations improved significantly. However, the "disappearance of a common enemy" at the end of the Cold War "brought to the surface" tensions between the United States and Europe, the newspaper said.

"Trump's anti—Europeanism is partly an expression of long-standing U.S. frustration, especially over the unequal burden of defense spending within NATO," the newspaper writes.

As The Wall Street Journal pointed out, American conservatives have long argued that Europe can afford generous social benefits only because the United States ensures its security.

As Mikhail Belyaev, PhD in Economics and financial analyst, told Izvestia at the end of February, if the United States imposes customs duties of 25% on European goods, this will lead to the deterioration of Europe's economic situation. In addition, such a decision by the American side will cause some tension in trade between the United States and France, he said.
