Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer criticized the refusal of Germany and other European Union (EU) countries to discuss easing sanctions against Russia. This was reported on March 29 by the newspaper Zeit-Online.

"An ongoing discussion about which of these sanctions may have a more detrimental effect on us than on Russia should be possible. But this is not happening," the politician said.

According to him, the German authorities should pay attention to the fact that sanctions against Russia weaken Germany. However, Berlin is not discussing options for easing restrictive measures.

Kretschmer suggested that the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the likely future German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, after taking up this position, will be able to hold a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin about easing sanctions. To do this, according to the politician, Berlin must first develop its position in order to be able to propose concrete measures to Moscow.

Earlier, on March 21, the Prime Minister of Saxony expressed hope for the resumption of cooperation between Russia and Germany. Kretschmer said that without Russia it would not be possible to create safe conditions on the European continent.
