Vance accused the Danish authorities of failing to protect Greenland from threats

The Danish authorities are not making sufficient efforts in relation to Greenland against the background of China and Russia's interest in the region. This was announced on March 28 by US Vice President Jay Dee Vance, arriving on the island and speaking to the military.
He noted that the US administration fears for Greenland's security and allegedly "has evidence of Russia and China's interest in the island," but does not deny the right of people living there to self-determination.
"We know that Russia, China and other countries are showing great interest in Arctic routes, Arctic sea routes and generally in the minerals of the Arctic territories. We need to ensure America's leadership in the Arctic, because we know that if America does not do this, other countries will fill the gap in which we are lagging behind," he assured.
Vance added that Washington has no plans to expand its military presence in Greenland, but it intends to invest in warships and icebreakers on its territory. According to him, the island will be better off under the protection of the United States. At the same time, he recalled that American leader Donald Trump had made it clear that Washington would not need to use force to make Greenland part of the United States.
Earlier, in December 2024, Trump said that for the United States, ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity. Prior to that, he expressed interest in buying the island from Denmark in 2019, but was refused. In the coming year, Trump was also told that the island was not for sale and would not be sold, but Denmark could cooperate more with the United States.
On March 26, the American president said that Greenland's accession to the United States was necessary to ensure national and international security. At the same time, he admitted that he did not know if the residents of Greenland had a desire to join the United States, but noted that "they must be persuaded" to become American citizens.
