- Carney, in a conversation with Trump, announced the introduction of retaliatory duties by Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, in a conversation with US President Donald Trump on March 28, announced the introduction of retaliatory duties by Ottawa after the United States announced tariffs expected on April 2.
"The prime Minister informed the president that his government will impose retaliatory tariffs to protect Canadian workers and our economy following the announcement of additional U.S. trade measures on April 2, 2025," the prime minister's office said in a statement.
The conversation was the first between the two leaders since Carney became prime minister on March 14. At the same time, the politician had previously stated that he would not talk to the US president.
"I'm ready to make a call, but we'll talk on our terms. As a sovereign country — not as what he gives us out to be — and under a comprehensive deal," Carney was quoted as saying by The Guardian.
Before the phone conversation with Trump, the prime minister told reporters that the conversation would be "only the beginning of negotiations, not the end."
Earlier, on March 27, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a change in the country's economic course due to Trump's actions during a press conference. Thus, the country intends to reduce its economic dependence on the United States. Canada also wants to rebuild the economy based on the policies of the President of the United States.
