With the onset of spring, the scooter riding season begins. Many Russians prefer this way of getting around the city, but it is important to remember that careless driving can cause injury. Elena Kosheleva, Director of Sberbank Insurance projects, told Izvestia on March 29 about how to avoid this.

"The first thing you should pay attention to when choosing a scooter is its technical condition. Make sure that the vehicle is working properly, pay special attention to the wheels. Many rental services offer vehicles with an electronic braking system — this choice will make your trips safer due to a more reliable design and faster deceleration," she said.

In addition, according to her, it is equally important to follow the rules of operation and traffic. You can not ride a scooter together — in addition to the fact that there is a fine for this, overloading can lead to engine burnout and frame deformation. An additional passenger also shifts the scooter's center of gravity, impairing its handling, which is especially important when driving at speed.

The expert recalled that, on average, it is recommended not to exceed a speed of 10 km/h for safe movement. At the same time, pedestrians have priority, and electric scooter drivers should give way to them and let them pass.

"It is especially important to remember that at pedestrian crossings it is necessary to get off the scooter and carry it nearby. This rule, which applies to all types of personal mobility aids, ensures safety for both you and other road users," Kosheleva emphasized.

However, electric scooters are allowed to ride on the right edge of the roadway, but only for people over the age of 14 and where the maximum speed is limited to 60 km/h. It is important not only to comply with this rule, but also to be attentive to the surrounding cars and motorcycles, the expert said.

"When riding a scooter, you need to be attentive to the situation on the road. Even if you are driving a vehicle with confidence, unexpected obstacles may arise along the way. For example, pits, the probability of falling into which is especially high in poorly lit areas. In addition, keep an eye on the condition of the surface and avoid riding on bumps," she added.

At the same time, it is useful to have your own helmet, elbow and knee protection. In case of a fall, this will minimize injuries.
