A court in Chisinau has decided to arrest the head of the Gagauz Autonomy, Evgenia Gutsul, for a period of 20 days. This was reported on March 28 by a journalist from Izvestia.

Earlier it was reported that she was charged with allegedly illegally financing the election campaign in 2023.

At the same time, as noted by Hutsul's lawyer Natalia Bayram, prosecutors were unable to substantiate her arrest in court.

"From the materials provided by the prosecutor, the defense proved in court that there is not a single reason, not a single piece of evidence or argument for the arrest or imprisonment of Evgenia Hutsul," Bayram told TASS.

The defense claims that there were no legal grounds for the arrest of the head at the Chisinau airport and her detention.

On the same day, it became known that prosecutors had requested 30 days of arrest for the detained head of Gagauzia. It was reported that the court session in Chisinau was held behind closed doors as Hutsuls were being suppressed. Representatives of the Moldovan opposition bloc Pobeda and their supporters gathered outside the building to support the head of Gagauzia.

The detention of Hutsul at the Chisinau airport without explanation became known on March 25. The Pobeda block reported that the head of Gagauzia was supposed to fly to Istanbul, where she was scheduled to meet. According to the Moldovan Prosecutor General's Office, the politician was detained after her name was found on the list of persons prohibited from leaving the country.

Later, the head of Gagauzia was taken to the National Anti-Corruption Center (NAC) of Moldova. The department reported that in the near future Hutsul will be formally charged in the case of violation of the procedure for managing election funds, illegal financing of election competitors and forgery of documents, prosecutors will ask the court to place her under preliminary arrest.
