A St. Petersburg man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for treason.

The Second Western District Military Court found a native of St. Petersburg guilty of treason and sentenced him to 12 years in prison. This was reported on March 28 in the press service of the Federal Security Service for the Belgorod region.

According to the investigation, the man intended to cross the state border in the region and join the Ukrainian terrorist paramilitary association to participate in activities directed against the Russian Armed Forces (RF Armed Forces). The criminal activity of the citizen was stopped by employees of the FSB border department for the Belgorod and Voronezh regions.

The court found the defendant guilty of committing crimes under Part 2 of Article 205.5 ("Participation in the activities of a terrorist organization"), Article 275 ("High treason") of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

"By the verdict of the Second Western District Military Court, he was found guilty of the crimes charged against him and sentenced to 12 years in prison," the regional FSB said in a statement, according to TASS.

Earlier, on March 25, a native of Perm was sentenced to 13 years in a high-security penal colony. The defendant was charged under the article on treason due to the fact that he transferred money as aid to the military of Ukraine. According to the agency, the man opposed a special military operation (SVO) to protect Donbass.
