A pulse rate of 100 beats per minute at rest is considered tachycardia, Oksana Pivovarova, professor of the Department of Therapy at the Medical Faculty of the State University of Education, therapist, told Izvestia on March 30.

According to her, among the physiological causes that are temporary and unrelated to diseases: stress, anxiety or excitement, physical activity, the use of caffeine, energy drinks, alcohol or nicotine, dehydration, high body temperature (for example, with colds or flu), taking certain medications (for example, medications for the treatment of asthma or colds).

There are also pathological causes that require attention. These include: heart disease (arrhythmia, coronary artery disease, heart failure), anemia (low hemoglobin), hyperthyroidism (increased thyroid function), low blood pressure (hypotension), infections or inflammatory processes in the body, electrolyte imbalance (lack of potassium, magnesium).

At the same time, if a pulse of 100 beats per minute occurs rarely and without serious symptoms, this may be a variant of the norm.

If a person is faced with such a situation, he needs to assess his condition.

"If the pulse rate has increased after physical exertion, stress or drinking coffee, this is normal. Try to calm down, relax, and your pulse rate should decrease. If the pulse rate of 100 or higher remains at rest, accompanied by dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain or weakness, this is a cause for concern and measures should be taken to reduce it," Pivovarova explained.

The therapist clarified that you need to sit down, lie down, and try to relax. You should take deep breaths and slow exhalations, drink water if there is a suspicion of dehydration. However, you should avoid caffeine, alcohol, and smoking.

"If the pulse rate of 100 or higher persists for a long time without obvious reasons, additional symptoms appear (chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, loss of consciousness), you have chronic diseases (heart, thyroid gland, etc.), be sure to consult a doctor. The doctor may prescribe an ECG, blood tests (for thyroid hormones, electrolytes, hemoglobin), ultrasound of the heart or Holter monitoring," the doctor added.

Speaking about prevention, she stressed that it is necessary to avoid stress and overwork, regularly engage in moderate physical activity (walking, swimming), monitor blood pressure and cholesterol levels. In addition, it is worth watching your diet: avoid excess caffeine, sugar and fatty foods.

Earlier, on March 28, Anastasia Fomicheva, a cardiologist at SM Clinic, told Izvestia that heart health depends on a number of factors and there are daily habits that negatively affect the condition of this organ. Smoking is considered one of the most dangerous habits for the heart. Once in the body, nicotine and other toxic compounds not only harm the lungs, but also significantly increase the likelihood of developing cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.
